One of the most exciting things that happened on our safari was not planned, or even spontaneous - it was more of an accident. As usual Scott and I were standing on the seats sticking our bodies out the top of the Land Rover, as we were driving along a rough dirt trail. Scott saw a deep but narrow ditch just ahead of us and braced himself, but he was the only one - even our driver had failed to notice it. The front wheels plunged into the ditch and I, standing in the back seat, pitched forward and my stomach slammed into the frame of the roof. The bottom of the ditch was slick mud, part of the vehicle frame was stuck on the more solid dirt at the edge, and the rear wheels were on ground that was also kind of slick - when we tried to get out the wheels just spun. It took some digging, some rocks, and Scott lifting up on the frame just to free the jack which had been attached to the front bumper. It didn't take long after that to get out. |
